As a follow up to the previous email (about possible subsidized coaching qualification), please see below a list of prerequisites and other expenses associated with becoming a coach.
Becoming a level 1 UKCC coach (Boat Based)
You need the following prerequisites, before attending the training and assessment weekend.
1) Aged 16 or over
2) An interest in paddle sport and keen to learn more
3) Have completed a BCU CST or Foundation Safety and Rescue Course
4) Hold the new 2 star award, which is a generic boat award or both old 2 star awards (kayak and open boat)
5) Registration with BCU awarding with Canoe England, this will cost £55, this cover your insurances, induction pack etc. If you are already a BCU member then this cost reduces to £39.
6) A comprehensive Canoe England membership (not the basic membership), this currently costs £37.75 for a year.
7) The fee usually £150, subsidized down to £50. This involves a contractual commitment to the club of 20 hours
8) I can't guarantee that there aren't any further forms you need, but I think that's it
Optional
9) First Aid certificate
10) Criminal records check
11) Register with the club as a coach (This bit isn't necessary yet, but at some point in the future may be)
These are listed as optional as you don't need them for the qualification, but you might need them to be allowed to coach in a club or training centre.
Becoming an aspirant Level 2 UKCC coach (Completing the training module)
A) Aged 17 or over
B) Have completed a BCU CST or Foundation Safety and Rescue Course
C) Hold a UKCC Level 1 coaching award or a BCU Level 2 training module (within the last 3 years)
D) Hold the new 2 star award, which is a generic boat award or both old 2 star awards (kayak and open boat)
E) Hold either a new or old 3 star award
F) Registration with BCU awarding with Canoe England, this will cost £55, this cover your insurances, induction pack etc. If you are already a BCU member then this cost reduces to £39 (This bit I'm not sure about, I've left it in as I expect there to be some fee or another to the BCU, but I can't find the details, but there's always a fee)
G) A comprehensive Canoe England membership (not the basic membership), this currently costs £37.75 for a year.
H) The fee usually £150, subsidized down to £50. This involves a contractual commitment to the club of 20 hours
I) First Aid certificate (Minimum 6hrs)
J) Criminal records check
K) Register with the club as a coach (This bit isn't necessary yet, but at some point in the future may be)
L) I can't guarantee that there aren't any further forms you need, but I think that's it.
Becoming an fully qualified Level 2 UKCC coach (Completing the assessment module)
i) This will include another two day course at some point in the future, at a cost of £150, unless we can find further subsidy
ii) An amount of time spent coaching. To complete your level 2, you will need to complete an amount of logged coaching time.
iii) Currently the internet doesn't show all the ins and outs of this half of the qualification, it's still listed as "To Follow Shortly".
It's up to you to decide whether or not to become a coach, coaching will enhance your own understanding of paddle sport, you may become a better paddler because of it. Some people try and decide it's not for them, others will find that it opens up the sport and allows them access to information and experiences that would not normally become available. If you're unsure speak to someone about it.
Hope this helps
Martin Thornton
