Subject: The Aire Spring Clean

 

As Members of the Leeds Canoe club who regularly paddle rivers all
around Yorkshire and further away, we have decided to do our bit for the
local area in Leeds. The River Aire may not be as well known as the
Zambezi , the White Nile or the mighty Tyne in the canoe world bit it
still has a lot to offer local paddlers.

With help from Morrisons supermarket, the National BIG TIDY CAMPAIGN,
Leeds City Council and Egger Timberpak who are providing us with a skip,
we are planning to "tidy up, spring clean" a section of the river Aire
from Kirkstall Abbey to St Annes Mill.   

It is intended for Club Members to walk along the bank and canoe down
the river collecting litter and rubbish, followed by a BBQ.  The planned
date is Saturday 24th April 2010. 

As river users we all see the potential the river Aire has for the local
community and doing this "spring clean" is our way of improving the area
for users and possible development.  (the council have a few plans
"apparently" to develop the river near St Anne Mill, this could include
a white water course!)
